John is one of the more powerful in the crew, having angelic blood running through him. I am looking for a more gruff, gravelly, low voice for him, he is often quite blunt and stoic, though has a soft and caring undertone. It just rarely comes out.

Okay, your voice is great! Though I feel like it would fit with other characters more, as I imagine John a bit more gruff and lower pitch. May I recommend you try out for the other guys, mainly Ray, I feel like your voice is closer to what I had in mind for him.
