FLO: So... are we going to discuss why I came back?
RUBY: Ah yes, why did you come exactly?
It takes Flo a moment: ‘She’s kidding, right?’
FLO: Mom. (a beat) Dad killed himself.
(At this point, the argument has become quite heated.)
FLO: Even after his death, you still hate him! What did he do to you?!RUBY: Florentine.
FLO: I don’t WANT to believe he kidnapped Katie, do YOU?!
RUBY: STOP IT, Florentine, if you know what’s good for you.
A beat.
FLO: Are we REALLY not going to TALK ABOUT IT?!
(Flo doesn’t give a crap. She’s decided she won’t let her mom step on her, and she won’t get angry every time her mother angers her. She’s nonchalant.)
RUBY: You don’t talk like that to your mother.FLO: Maybe if you started acting like one --
RUBY: Florentine! Everything I’ve done is to protect you!
FLO (nonchalant): Who do you repeat that for? Me or you?
