Evelyn is in her early 40s and not entirely right in the head. She stands by her abusive husband because of an internal fear of being alone. She puts on an upbeat facade, pretending everything is fine, while simultaneously being kind of empty inside. She doesn't really go out of her way to stop the abuse that happens in her wake. Evelyn is not a good mother. Her character is very similar to Arthur Fleck's mother in Todd Phillips' Joker movie.
(In this scene, Evelyn is introducing her new boyfriend Frank to her kids. The scene's general tone is lighthearted)
*Happy/excited*
"Oh, it was wonderful, son! I'm actually going back out with Frank, but I wanted to introduce you to him first. Is that alright?"
(In this scene, Evelyn is drunk and arguing with her son. She blames him for Frank's absence and Lyra's death.)
