Priestess Esme Kyees is the mother of Amber and Emma, and wife of the late Mayor Ajo. She is a supporting role, but is a key part of the story. She appears quite young for her age,

She is a generally speaking very traditional woman. Esme believes that there is more use in learning the true form of pyrokenisis than just focusing on weaponry.

However, she does not want her daughters making the same mistakes as she did with never speaking out against things that are wrong to them (yet is still furious if Amber defys her!), and encourages them to fight against the people who murdered her husband.

  •  (angry) What are you doing? I told you A THOUSAND TIMES you're NOT ALLOWED to use your weapon inside! If only you learned to use your natural power we wouldn't have this argument--- I am your mother! How dare you talk in such manner to me?

  •  (distraught/determined) If your father were still here... Things would be a lot easier. Life kicks you where it hurts, though. That's why you must learn to fight.
