I was a bit too hasty with assigning roles.
Some people were still looking to submit auditions, and I closed a few roles too early. My apologies if I assigned you to a role and then un-assigned you. That was not right of me.
First of all, THIS PROJECT IS NOT OFFICIAL, NOR IS IT ENDORSED BY MANE6 OR ANY OF THEIR PUBLISHERS OR AFFILIATES!
Well, it looks like story mode may never get completed now. Did you hear the news? https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/574980/view/3882727783056476087 My original plan was to keep this project in draft mode until story mode was complete, but now that that's not happening, I'm changing my plans a bit. (Also, check out this tweet from Lauren Faust: https://twitter.com/Fyre_flye/status/1728254869654712762 )
[What I originally wrote; this no longer applies.]
This project will not go live until Mane6 completes the production of story mode. Currently, the game's story mode only has one chapter.
When story mode is complete, then casting for this project will begin. It will be mostly unpaid, with some exceptions.
My plans for payment are as follows:
1. The individuals who voice Arizona and Oleander will receive $150, the individuals who voice Velvet and Fred will each receive $50, and the individuals who voice Paprika, Pom, and Cashmere will receive $25 each. (This totals up to $475 I'm ready to spend for a passion-driven, mostly-unpaid fan project.) Given that Tianhuo and Shanty have no lines in story mode, their rates can be individually negotiated in private, for whatever Book of Lore lines or fan comics there are to dub.
2. Anyone who I have specifically invited because of their involvement with the informal dub done by the Fightin' Foenatics stream (or specifically invited by me by some other method and reason) will get paid an amount for their characters that they deem fair and negotiate with me in private.
3. Anyone else who auditions for other roles (besides the Fightin' Six) or background/minor roles of their own volition will not be paid, as this is for all intents and purposes an unpaid fan project, a labor of love, and something requiring passion and eagerness.
For a template of the basic idea of what I'm aiming for with this dub, see my story mode gameplay playlist on YouTube, where I dubbed all of the lines of dialogue present in story mode: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL20yZ_PGtT5BoSCQlwsLG7q4fn_hqi9x3
Some people were still looking to submit auditions, and I closed a few roles too early. My apologies if I assigned you to a role and then un-assigned you. That was not right of me.
Would anyone like to take on her role? I'll give you until Friday the 2nd before I solicit outside VAs to voice Anga.
There are still lots of unfilled roles, most of them females. I'm going to reach out to a few VAs I know and/or have worked with in the past and invite them to audition if I can. Please share this around! And if you were already thinking of auditioning for this project, but haven't gotten around to it yet, see if you can find time this weekend to record! Thank you!
Only two weeks until auditions close. Some roles are still unfulfilled! If any unfilled roles remain after the deadline, I'll assign people who have auditioned to roles they didn't audition for. (Meaning, I'll message you and request that you submit an audition for a particular character so I can assign you on the site.) We'll work with what we have!
I hope everyone reading this had a good holiday. I'm hoping more auditions come in soon - remember, the deadline is January 31st.
I'll communicate with applicants individually after auditions close. Have fun!
One of the main characters. Bio is quoted from https://www.mane6.com/characters/arizona/
Prairie born ‘n raised, Arizona is the youngest daughter of Texas and Minnesota, Head Bull and Cow of her cattlekind clan.
Despite her small size, she’s incredibly strong. Though lacking in experience, she’s undeterred by obstacles. Many older folks underestimate Arizona, but few are more dependable or trustworthy. When called to action, her powerful headbucks and quaking stomps send opponents flying, then she reels ’em back in with her trusty lasso.
Arizona was the only one among cattlekind with courage enough to answer the Council’s call in search of Foenum’s Champion, knowing full well what dangers she faced. Thrust into the wider outside world, Arizona tries to make sense of it all (or decides not to care) while she charges headfirst into the fray.
Quoted from the fan wiki:
Arizona, even being such a young cow as herself, has a big heart: she loves her homeland, and believes that everyone else in Foenum also deserves a free life. She's courageous, ready to help anyone in need and stand her ground to save the whole world. Although Arizona's enthusiasm and being too honest can lead her into trouble. She's not a cow of words but rather action: without thinking, she's ready to dive head-full into the events. Arizona also tends to show more of her cocky side, throwing some snarky comments toward her opponents.
Being the primary role in a mostly unpaid fandub project, Arizona's VA will be paid a flat rate of $150. Do your best to sound just like Tara Strong! Here's a video to help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNhVe-PR7zQ
Looks like it's time for a throw-down!
Like my Pa always says: "Never underestimate the power of a kick in the head!"
These are a few of my favorite things: kickin', stompin', and kickin'! [or, you could try this line from story mode] Come on, ya'll! I ain't gonna hurt 'ya! Who's got info for your champ'een?!
One of the main characters. Bio is quoted from https://www.mane6.com/characters/velvet/
Velvet enjoys premiere status as a member of Reine City‘s ruling elite, the peak of modern civilization at the center of the world, high in the frozen north. She is the daughter of Jarl Stronghoof Hoofstrong, whose family line has been passed down his family line for generations.
No deer in Reine is Velvet’s equal in the practice of Winter Magic, in form nor in function. She is perfection personified, supremacy symbolized. Those who dare challenge her will be left with nothing but a cold shoulder.
A grand tournament was held in Reine City to determine who was most fit to answer the Council’s call and become Foenum’s Champion. Velvet trounced all opposition without so much as breaking a sweat. Haven’t heard the news? Well, you’re forgiven for now. Can’t rightly blame someone for living under a rock. You’ll see… soon enough.
Quoted from the fan wiki:
Velvet is a narcissistic type of character, being completely full of herself and putting her looks and floof over other things. If it wasn't for the big ego, one would say she's the definition of perfection. She won't hesitate to throw sharp and rude comments, and often thinks lower of others. However, she's willing to contribute herself as the champion to save Foenum, because she believes it takes only the best one to do so.
Being one of the primary roles in a mostly unpaid fandub project, Velvet's VA will be paid a flat rate of $50. Do your best to sound just like Tia Lynn Ballard! Here's a video to help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DZ9wSgIOlI
Saving ze world never looked so good!
Lucky you! You get to be defeated by me!
[angry] I hold you accountable for any damage done to my floof!
One of the main characters. Bio is quoted from https://www.mane6.com/characters/paprika/
High in the Huacaya Mountains, alpaca roam though inhospitable wilderness as their ancestors have since the dawn of time. The harsh, barren environment leaves little room for any pursuits other than raw survival.
But there is one among them who eschews their sober, serious attitude. Her name is Paprika, and she’s brimming with vigorous affection. Some say she aims to fill the world with love the land never had for her, but whatever her reasons, she feels compelled to share all she has and more, whether you’re willing or not.
Paprika is a basketcase and a whole bag of tricks, tossing a variety of gifts and zipping around the stage faster than anyone is able to keep track of. Crushing embraces and surprising kisses make for some of her deadliest techniques. Once she decides you’re the love of her life, there can be no escape.
Quoted from the fan wiki:
Paprika, even for being a non-talking character, radiates her personality: she wants to give love. One could say she's even selfish about it, since she won't care for possible consequences of her affection and crushing bearhugs. What matters to her is that she wants to share her love with someone, anyone. Little is known about Paprika's personality in detail, but this uncertainty is what makes her mysterious and equally dangerous.
Being a supporting role in a mostly unpaid fandub project, Paprika's VA will be paid a flat rate of $25. Currently, Paprika has no spoken voice lines, but she does make lots of noises. There are also possible dubs of fan comics to consider. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6S2V3NsJLA
[Do your best to replicate the sounds Marieve Herington makes in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6S2V3NsJLA ]
Can I make waffles? I *love* waffles! Going on vacation? Great! "Alpaca" my bags and follow you!
[Pick any of the comics under this tag and choose your favorite Paprika spoken line to audition with: https://derpibooru.org/search?q=paprika+can+talk&sf=score&sd=desc ]
One of the main characters. Bio is quoted from https://www.mane6.com/characters/oleander/
Oleander, the great-granddaughter of Divine Oracle Amaryllis, sensed the return of Predator-kind 13 years before the first actual sighting. Her masters in the Order of the Horn saw no need to take action, as always, urging her to trust that the power of Light Magic would keep Foenum safe.Frustrated and desperate, she took matters upon herself. She began studying from a book of Dark Magic and eventually forged a pact with the demon trapped inside it. The evidence of her blasphemous act manifested over time as her coat began to turn a darker shade. Despite condemnation from those around her, Oleander is determined to prove that Dark Magic can be used to do good. With the aid of her demonic companion FHTNG TH§ ¿NSP§KBL? (Fred for short), Oleander may steal energy from her opponents, eventually amassing enough to temporarily loosen Fred’s bindings so he may fight alongside her. But can she really control Fred, or will she discover the reason for his imprisonment after it’s already too late…?
Quoted from the fan wiki:
Oleander can be best described as a troubled teen: she's long been known as the Order of the Horn's resident rebel. She's snarky, arrogant, and won't hesitate to directly insult her opponent, but shows a softer side for puppies and doughnuts. Oleander also cannot stand her peers' closed-minded philosophy of Light Magic prevailing over everything. She believes that Dark Magic can be used for good and is determined to prove it. Oleander cares for nothing but saving Foenum from the impending threat of the predators.
Being one of the primary roles in a mostly unpaid fandub project, Oleander's VA will be paid a flat rate of $100, plus an additional $50 for everything in the tutorial. Do your best to sound just like Alexa Kahn! Here's a video to help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-kobxBuUus (also includes Fred clips)
My magic may be dark, but it will bring light to the world. Do not underestimate the good that dark magic can do.
I have trained **years** for this, you will *not* dissuade me!
Hello there! My name is Oleander, Champion of Foenum, and your tutorial guide. Pleasure to meet you. Press Confirm to advance my dialogue and Start to skip straight to play. During play, press start to open the options menu. Right then. Shall we get started?
One of the main characters. Bio is quoted from https://www.mane6.com/characters/pom/
Sheeple are a democratic society. Upholding the will of the masses (or the flock in this case), is among their most core values. Problem is, all Sheep will vote in favor of the very first suggestion any Sheep happens to make. Pom made the mistake of suggesting that they should respond to the Council’s call for a Champion at all, and ended up being voted in as Champion herself. Sheep Dogs, the only large predators in Foenum with instincts to protect ungulates rather than eat them, live among the Sheep and keep them safe from harm. Occasionally a pack may choose to spend most of their time around one particular Sheep over another, and Pom has found herself in the company of a rather large one as of late. Perhaps they see a burning potential building inside her… because despite her desperate cries to return to her soft, grassy homeland, they continue to urge her along. Pom approaches combat by calling a variety of dogs onto the battlefield for coordinated strikes. Her “technical requirements” can be challenging to work with, but with proper time and coaching, she might just become the strongest fighter of them all.
Quoted from the fan wiki:
Being still a youngling put into a serious situation, Pom is more often seen to be scared and nervous, and would rather not put up fight against others. She has low self-esteem, thinking she's not strong and courageous enough to face off her foes. However, in comparison to her folks, who she despises for being so cowardly and herd-minded, Pom is shown to have opinions of her own. She doesn't hesitate to celebrate her small victories, and cheer the puppies who help her along the way.
Being a supporting role in a mostly unpaid fandub project, Pom's VA will be paid a flat rate of $25. Do your best to sound just like Allie Moreno! Here's a video to help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hq8OOcwkgPY
[whining] I don't wanna be here! [calmly] Can we just... talk? [mimic Allie Moreno's take for all of these]
[trying to get control of them] Puppies, no! Stop, sit! Ugh, stay! [putting on happiness to try to avoid a fight] You wouldn't hit a wee lamb, would you?
[meek but happy] I'm sorry, didn't mean to win! I guess I don't know my own strength. I think the pups did most of the work.
One of the main characters. Tianhuo is a longma; half horse, half dragon. Bio is quoted from https://www.mane6.com/characters/tianhuo/ I used to think her name was pronounced "TYAN-hwhoa". Now, I suppose, I can be convinced that the actual and proper way to pronounce her name is "Tyan-HWA", or something close to that. Listen to how the in-game announcer says it, or how Stronghoof says her name in this unused voice line: https://tcrf.net/index.php?title=File%3ATFH_Stronghoof_intro_vs_Tianhuo2)_amalg.ogg
Longma of the Huoshan Empire are few in number but carry extraordinary heritage: half-dragon, half-horse. They believe they embody the best traits of both: peaceful minds and hardy bodies from the ungulates, iron wills and the strength to fight from the predators.
The road to perfect balance is often described as more of a tightrope. Sway too far in one direction or the other, and you could send yourself tumbling. Tianhuo’s ruthless ambition to purge herself of all weakness had manifested as cruelty to others in the past, but in the years since she has self-reformed. Now she serves as Captain of the Guard in service to Her Royal Highness the Longestma, Empress of Huoshan.
Tianhuo was the natural choice for Champion: with her unmatched physical prowess, skill with flight, and command over dragon fire. She believes she’s the only one powerful and worthy enough to save Foenum, but will pure-blooded ungulates truly accept a half-predator?
Quoted from the fan wiki:
For certain she is an intimidating sight, emitting stoic confidence, but not a hint of arrogance. She has no disdain for her opponents. In fact, she greatly admires skill and strength and cannot enjoy a duel unless she faces a combatant who offers her a challenge... no one is more disciplined, no one more determined, and even the Predators’ Champion should beware!
Being a supporting role in a mostly unpaid fandub project, Tianhuo's VA will be paid an amount negotiated in private. The only lines we have of her to dub are in the Book of Lore and potentially any good-enough fan comics. Do your best to sound just like Kay Bess! Here's a video to help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqKF5RgaTlo
Honored Mother, give me strength. Honored Father, give me courage.
I hope you have been keeping up with your training.
You're not a warrior, yet. You have much to learn.
One of the secondary characters. Bio is quoted from the fan wiki:
FHTNG TH§ ¿NSP§KBL?, also known as FHTNG and Fred, is the demonic entity that resides in the Unicornomicon. He formed a pact with Oleander in her quest to save Fœnum, though his true motives remain unknown. At an unknown point in time, 13 seasons before the incursion of predators, Oleander acquired the Unicornomicon to learn Dark Magic, which she believes can be weaponized for good purposes. As the source of the book's power, FHTNG allowed Oleander to study the spells within, but neglected to tell her of the consequences of reading too much, causing her coat to darken and the Order of the Horn to shun her. Before Oleander burned the book, the demon convinced her to keep it and suggested she continue studying it, for she would be the one to save the world.
Being a supporting role in a mostly unpaid fandub project, Fred's VA will be paid a flat rate of $50; he has lines in story mode and the tutorial, but is not a main character. Do your best to sound just like Keith Ferguson! Here's a video I made to help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHQ7yK6fehY
Read all of Fred's lines here: https://themsfightinherds.fandom.com/wiki/Oleander/Quotes
[Oleander: I don't want to hurt you, but you leave me no choice.] For the record, *I do want to hurt you!* / [Oleander: My magic may be dark, but it will bring light to the world.] Yeah, or dark, either one. /[Oleander: Fine, but let's make it quick.] Slow works too. More fun for me! / [Oleander: I have trained years for this, you will not dissuade me!] Go get 'em, Ollie!
[dark voice] *Phenomenal cosmic power!* [nebbish voice] ...itty-bitty living space. / [see video for additional context to each line] I do not agree to these terms! / Yeah, I'm thinking plan A's off the table. / It saves *my* world, rawr~ / I got moves she ain't even tried!
[Oleander summons him in the game's tutorial] SHEESH, you don’t have to make a scene about it! I’m right here. [Oleander: Um… Fred… Could you… perhaps…] [dark voice] Draw back the curtain of reality to reveal your beloved plane of existence is a laughable charade of order held together by glue and popsicle sticks? [Oleander: …yes?] [back to nebbish] Fine, but you’re buying donuts next time! Ah hem… Looks like we have quite a bit of work to do on your perception. When your punch lands, I wager you think it’s because your body made contact with theirs. That’s cute… [dark voice] Open your eyes… [nebbish] TADA! Your physical presence in this world consists of little rectangular *Hitboxes*. These current ones you see are your vulnerable bits, called *Hurtboxes*. I’ve taken the liberty of putting them in a lovely shade of green.
One of the supporting characters. Bio is quoted from https://www.mane6.com/characters/shanty/
It is well known among the creatures of Foenum that when a goat sets her eye on something, it’s only a matter of time before she gets it.
Shanty, named after a song with no title, was taken in by notorious pirate captain Bravura after being orphaned at a very young age. She studied the ways of salt and sail, instilled with the belief that the only ones who make it in life are those brave enough to fight to the last.
For Shanty to earn a place as a true member of her pirate crew, she has to prove her worth. And it isn’t enough to meet the bar, Shanty aims to blow it out of the water. That means stealing the most valuable treasure in the world: which just so happens to be the Prophet’s Key! Only one who’s worthy? It’s gonna be Shanty!
Quoted from the fan wiki:
As an aspiring pirate, Shanty values freedom, bravery, and looting. She's what can be described as a "meaner Arizona", as a result of being raised in a less heartwarming environment: she's more daring and reckless than the rest of the cast, and won't hesitate to threaten her opponent before getting down to brawling. Shanty will do anything to achieve her goal and prove herself to be the best pirate, even if it's not necessarily about saving the world.
Being a minor in a mostly unpaid fandub project, Shanty's VA will be paid an undetermined amount negotiated in private. The only material we have of Shanty's that we can dub is... a small handful of fan comics, honestly. It's kind of sad.
Do your best to sound just like Afi Ekulona! Here's a video to help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkfLRSzG1uw
Ain't no treasure is safe from me!
Gimme the key, or mi gonna mash you up!
That's right! Mi gwine run tings pan dem Foenum seas!
One of the main playable fighters, but a secondary character in story mode. Bio is quoted from https://www.mane6.com/characters/texas
Texas has led a storied career of adventure and carries great pride for cattlekind, symbolized by the yoke and star he bears on his back. His place as Head Bull was earned with hard work, sacrifice, and good ol’ fashioned charm!
As Arizona’s father and with the whole of Foenum at stake, he yearns to do his part in support of his daughter’s quest to save the world. So despite his age, he sets out on his own for one last journey, leaving care of the clan to his wife Minnesota, before settling down for good. (Promise!!)
Wielding twin cowbells attached by ropes to his mighty yoke, Texas uses mass and momentum to send them flying towards his opponents, reeling them into range of his heaviest strikes. Everybody knows, you don’t mess with Texas!
Quoted from the fan wiki:
While looking intimidating at first, Texas is a kind, protective, and honourable bull. He cherishes his life of a traveler as it is, and he loves his family dearly.
Being a supporting role in a mostly unpaid fandub project, Texas's VA will not be paid. Do your best to sound just like Patrick Seitz! There currently is no video compiling all of Texas' voice lines, but you can hear some of them in his announcement trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzZnTSwOLgo
More voice lines from Texas can be heard here: https://tcrf.net/Them's_Fightin'_Herds#Unused_Character_Lines These are unused lines, but still in the game files.
All Texas voice lines from the game can be read here: https://themsfightinherds.fandom.com/wiki/Texas/Quotes
Steer clear, here comes Texas!
Better luck next time, partner!
GATHER `ROUND EV'RYONE! [the cows slowly come out from behind the wagons] *cough* yella bellies. *cough* IN DAYS OF OLD... ... all the hoofed folk of Foenum roamed together as one big ol' herd. And the world, well, it was one big ol' field where the grass was ours for the grazin'. We had a peace that lasted long as the tunnels of ten packs of prairie dogs. But times... they're always changin', yessir.
Minnesota is the head cow of the Prairie's Cattlekind. She's the wife of Texas and Arizona's mother. Unlike Texas, Minnesota is more mild-mannered and understanding of her daughter's choices.
[to Texas] Oh fer geez-- you shush! Our girl here has proven her worth, don'tcha know. She may be small, but, yeah sure you betcha, her heart is bigger than The Prairie itself.
[to Texas] Oh there, there. You sure are the biggest, strongest bull Cattlekind has ever known... But let's not be silly now...
Arizona of The Prairie. Child of Purple Mountains Majesty, Amber Waves of Grain! I dub thee... Champ'een of Cattlekind! Now go, and... SAVE... THE... WORLD! [she kisses Arizona on the forehead] Ya little sugar booger...
Cashmere is a Reindeer who runs Cap'n'Cash's apparel shop in the Pixel Lobby along with a Winter Sprite named Cap. She's a cousin of Velvet, making Stronghoof Hoofstrong her uncle. Cashmere presents herself as friendly and welcoming to her customers, although her primary interest is salt (money). She expresses disappointment if the customer doesn't have enough to make a purchase, but will be enthusiastic if they have a lot. She also has a bit of a flirty side—sometimes subtle, sometimes not so much—as seen in her interactions with Oleander in the Pixel Lobby, in whom she shows a clear interest.
She has a lot of lines in the pixel lobbies and also some in story mode, so I have decided to pay this role a flat rate of $25.
[smiling] Cap says, "welcome to our house of exchange! Salt for attire, it's time for a change." What is it that you desire most...? How much are you willing to pay for it? [Cap says something in gibberish] No. The scarf is not for sale, Cap.
[frowning] Ick. So dusty. I will most certainly need a bath after we’re done in The Prairie… [Cap says something while he smiles] That was *not* an invitation.
[greeting Arizona in Reine City] Oh! Hello there. I’m afraid we’re not officially open until tomorrow. Still restocking after an abroad sales tour… But… if you’re simply DYING to part with your salt in exchange for my Foenum-famous fabulous fashion… [quieter] I’ll do business anytime you like… [neutrally] How may I be of assistance?
Velvet's father, and Cashmere's uncle. (Which would make Velvet's full name "Velvet Hoofstrongdottr".) He's a Jarl of the Deerfolk in Reine City. Unlike the rest of Deerfolk, Stronghoof is shown to be more humble and friendly towards strangers, even if they're not of the same species as he is.
During Part II of Chapter 1, Stronghoof can be seen surrounded by other Deerfolk, fawning over him. Arizona can find and speak with him in Reine City, where he will judge her strength and bravery based on how many predators she has defeated up to that point. He will reward Arizona with the Heroic Headband if she has eliminated all of the predators in the Abandoned Salt Mines in Part I, or cleared out the Haunted Undercity during Part II.
Stronghoof is a DLC fighter, voiced by Christopher Sabat, so do your best to sound like Chris. His announcement trailer, with some voice lines, is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vlIQ21-fj0
More in-game voiced quotes from him can be read here: https://themsfightinherds.fandom.com/wiki/Stronghoof_Hoofstrong/Quotes
Additionally, there are unused voice lines from Stronghoof you can hear here: https://tcrf.net/Them's_Fightin'_Herds#Unused_Character_Lines
Here are some additional lines from that page you may consider for your audition (if you want to get direct inspiration from Chris Sabat's voice):
1. "Witness the might of Stronghoof!" (This is a good line to say to get into character, since it's his 'selected' voice line.)
2. "Life. Death. All living things must follow the cycle. You bear witness to the ancestral glory of Hoofstrong Magic! This is the true power of winter! To destroy, create, our ice magic is that of renewal! BE REBORN!"
3. "Was that your best? I want to see your best."
4. "Mastering others is strength, mastering yourself is true power, little calf."
(These are just suggestions.)
[to Arizona] Hello, little calf! I am Stronghoof Hoofstrong, Jarl of Reine City. ["Oh really?! 'Ya know 'bout the Predators?"] Indeed, I do... Had I not banished so many of the vile shades with my own hooves, I would no sooner call myself a Hoofstrong. How many predators have YOU defeated, little calf? How tough are you? Hmm... ...Ah this is good. Your muscles ripple with conviction! Your spirit sings with valor! Here, a token from me. The mark of a true warrior. Wear it with pride!
[if Arizona has only defeated some of the predators so far] Hmm... impressive, but not impressive enough. You must fight more battles to understand true strength.
[if Arizona has barely defeated any predators so far] Tsk... frail! You need far more combat experience if you hope to grasp greatness...
The voice of the game, giving you technical information while you play story mode. May or may not also be the narrator at the beginning of the prologue. Can be male or female.
If male, I would like the voice to sound like Aaron Stavely, the game's studio manager and head of narrative design. You can hear his voice in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ir0o1x6giag or one of his other videos: https://www.youtube.com/@aaronstavely7777
If female, I would like the voice to sound like the game's official announcer, Jessica Gee-George. She has a somewhat Australian accent.Take a listen to this video I made to hear all of her voice lines: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xLtpYy0CAx0 In an old developer stream from the Indiegogo crowdfunding days, the announcer's accent was described in-universe as being "Ancient Foenician".
Beta (Chris Huval), a programmer on the game, once said this about the announcer (I presume he was talking about the announcer, but the PDF I'm looking at doesn't give the full context): "like an old experienced woman who's been through too much shit to take anything seriously anymore".
I may or may not decide to split this into two roles.
[as a narrator] Reine City, Capital to the nation of The Tundra, just one of many nations in the world of... Foenum. For the first time in countless generations, the Foenum Council of Ungulates has been reformed and now convenes to discuss a matter of utmost urgency...
[as if you're a Dungeon Master in a tabletop roleplaying game] A simple oil lamp. That cow was very insistent on keeping the cave lit. You could still turn it off, if you feel like being a beef jerky. Really turn this lamp off?
[giving instructions to the player in story mode] You're under attack! Time to arm yourself with the right tools for battle. Strike with Light, Medium, and Heavy. Use Magic for unique abilities! But your opponent isn't going to just stand there and wait around! Be ready for their attacks! Hold down-back, back, or up-back to block. That's any direction AWAY from the main enemy! Hold down-back to block while crouching. This also protects you from LOW attacks. Block crouching when both you and your opponent are on the ground, which is most of the time!
Anga is an old female rhino who appears in Story Mode's Prologue. She is the chief of Foenum's Council of Ungulates. At the Council, Anga starts the discussion of the predators' return by claiming there's a survivor: Ribbon, who had encountered a small pack of wolves. After listening to the story, Kalimat insists that the legends of The Prophet's Key are true, and they must seek a champion to find the Key. While Anga is skeptical at first, she admits it must be taken seriously. However, she believes it won't be easy to settle on one champion, and so she calls all nations of Foenum to choose a champion of their own, and they will battle each other for the right to seek the Key.
The council [will be made up of miscellaneous cast members]:
Fellow Ungulates, even and odd-toed alike... We, the appointed Elders of our nations, are gathered here today to discuss the disturbing rumors that have been circulating across all of Foenum. And to bear witness, we have found... a survivor!
Do not be frightened, small one. Tell us what you saw.
Fellow Ungulates! Hear my decree! Antelopians from The Valley, Whitetail of The Forest, Goatani of The Islands, Bisenne of The Plains, Equines of The Steppes, and all the other proud nations of Foenum... Choose your own champion! Send them on the quest for this legendary Key. It will be their duty to battle against each other, horn against hoof against antler! Until one champion, and one alone, remains. Whoever that Ungulate is will have proven themselves worthy to be the Protector of Foenum... [slightly louder] ... our Key Keeper! [resume volume] We must find the strongest of us all to face this thread. For if we fail... All of Foenum shall surely perish...
Ribbon is a zebra foal who appears in Story Mode's Prologue. Ribbon makes her appearance at the Foenum Council of Ungulates. As Council Chief Anga announces the start of the discussion, she lets Ribbon speak. The foal tells her story of encountering a small pack of wolves. When she was chased down and cornered, the wolves demanded she take them to the Prophet's Key. But the dawn came just in time, blasting the predators with morning light and turning them into smoke. Just as they were disintegrating, they warned her of the predators' return.
[Anga: Do not be frightened, small one. Tell us what you saw.] Yes, ma'am. You see, I was back home in The Savanna, just before dawn. I woke up early that morning when I felt a firefly tickle my nose. I chased it through the tall grass. Just, you know... playin' around...
Anyway, it took me all the way to the watering hole... and that's when I saw them! Big, mean looking creatures. Black as night, but you could see through them! Like... ghosts! [the council gasps] That's what I said! They were like nothing I've seen before! They were four-legged... but their hooves were strange -- soft and round with little points sticking out. The hair of their coats were long and thick and shaggy, almost like a bison... They spoke to one another. Their voices were low and scratchy... like they had eaten thorns. I tried, but I couldn't understand. And then... then...
One lifted its head, sniffed the air with his pointed nose. I was hidden in the grass -- I know I was, but... That's when they all whipped around and stared straight at me! The biggest one croaked out... "GRASS EATER"!!! [the council gasps again] That's what I said! ...That's not a bad word, is it? Am I allowed to say that?
Kalimat is an elderly camel who appears in Story Mode's Prologue. He's a vizier of the Foenum Council of Ungulates. In the Prologue, Kalimat can be seen beside Anga at the Foenum Council of Ungulates, listening to Ribbon's story of how she encountered the predators and how they had mentioned the Prophet's Key. Kalimat insists to Anga that the legends of the Prophet and the Key must be true if predators are seeking it, to which Anga responds with skepticism. However, Kalimat convinces her to find a champion worthy of carrying the Key.
Note: I think "Anga" is pronounced with a short "A" sound, as in the word "Applause" or "obtuse". Not a long "A" as in "angle".
Council Chief! The foal's account lines up with the other reports. She is lucky to remain unscathed... [Anga: Indeed... and now we know they're looking for a Key...] And now you can no longer deny it, Anga. The legends are true!
[Anga: Oh you and your legends again. Don't be a fool, old man.] This Key they seek is real, so the legends must be, too! Somewhere, there is a mystic door keeping our ancient enemies, The Predators, at bay. You are all fools if you do not heed this warning! I propose we find the bravest, strongest, most skilled amongst us to find The Key... we must name a champion!
Shadow creatures seeking a Key. Sharp teeth and claws. It's all real! The Predators really *are* returning! Councilors, our library speaks of a Great Priestess who sealed Foenum's ancient enemies behind a magic door far beyond the borders of our world... and its power is failing! You're all fools if you do not heed this warning! I beg you... send out a call to our bravest, strongest, wisest warriors! If the Predators are seeking this Key... *we* must find it first!
A wolf that has a small role in the opening prologue of story mode. Quality auditions would have also been cast as other predators, if they talked at all. Ribbon, the zebra foal, describes their voices like this: "I heard their voices. Low and scratchy... like they had accidentally eaten a bundle of thorns. I tried to listen, but nothing made sense."
GRASS EATER!
The KEY! Take us to THE KEY!
We are Predator. We are returning. And we are... ... hungry...
Madison is a cow who sells milk to Deerfolk. Arizona stumbles upon Madison in the Canyon Pass, near the collapsed bridge. Madison says it will take up to two days until it's fixed, but Arizona can't wait for it. Madison mentions the salt mines tunnel near the bridge but advises Arizona not to go there, instead offering her a place to sleep for the night and wait until next morning.
Arizona's interaction with Madison has many possible branching paths, depending on what she's done so far, and what she asks.
Quality auditions may also get cast as other cow characters.
[to Arizona] Howdy there, cowgirl! Thought I heard hooves a-comin’... [she winks] Would be nice ‘ta have some company. Don’t be shy now!
[Arizona tells her she took a harder route] Wha... you tellin' me you climbed all the way up the side 'a the cliff?! You half-goat or somethin'?!
Reine City?! Well bless my bonnet, sure's a co'inky-dink if I ever heard one! 'Was headed there 'ta sell some grain 'n milk. Ever since the decree went out, they're buyin' up as much as they can get! I tell 'ya that Deerfolk city ain't nothin' but a slum 'a snoot-bags... but they're practically givin' away their salt. Times are what they are. What kind 'a business d'ya have there, cowgirl?
The boss of story mode chapter 1, section 1. Quality auditions would have gotten other predator roles, but now that story mode is canceled, I guess we'll never see that.
THE KEEEY. GIVE USSSssss THE KEEEY.
[Arizona: Not gonna happen! I ain't scared'a y'all creepy critters! I'm Arizona, Champ'een of the Prairie, an' if y'want the Key, 'ya gotta go through me!] ssSSSO BE IT.
An NPC in story mode chapter 1 that Arizona meets, and helps her to get inside Reine City. Quality auditions may also be cast as other cow characters. Like most NPCs, this character has a randomized appearance every time you play.
Howdy, calf! ‘Yer a pretty long ways from The Prairie!
Tell ya what, my "travelin' companions" have been takin' their sweet time over there in the saloon. I've gotta stay here and mind the wagons, but all this standin' around has worked me up a mighty appetite. Here's a bit 'a salt. Could 'ya pop in there an' buy me somethin' decent 'ta eat? None 'a that fancy mess. Jus' some plain ol' country food. You know the stuff.
WHOA, are those pancakes?! [Arizona: They sure are!] Thanks again! As promised, here's some 'a my finest. See what them boys think 'a THAT. Pleasure doin' business with 'ya! Good luck, calf!
A bartender at the "Long Tail Winding" Inn, where Arizona is tasked with getting some food for the cow outside, so that she can get milk, with which she can bribe her way into Reine City. She's not happy about the cows coming in as customers.
Quality auditions may get cast as other female deer in Reine City. I was going to say "and elsewhere in story mode", but chapter 1 is all we get. There are A LOT of deer NPCs in chapter 1, though.
[with fake sincerity, upon seeing Arizona] Another cow! How nice.
[Arizona asks what is available] [with a hint of disdain and sarcasm] Well, aside from the usual drink choices, we do also serve food. [a bit more normal] Today’s special is potato and fern kumla with a side of cranberry sauce. The soup of the day is cream of oats chowder. But… that’s only for reindeer… I’ve got a delicious moss and mushroom salad with vinaigrette dressing, a northern specialty. Or, if none of that suits your… *rustic* tastes… there’s always grass.
[Arizona: "Know any recipes from The Prairie?"] [mildly insulted] Sure, I’m not insulted! I’ll get you what most cows order. [...] Here, take some svele. [Arizona: "Pancakes?! This is perfect! I’ll get these to my friend quick as a wink!"] [somewhat deadpan] Yes. Pancakes. I bet you like that.
Guards who patrol atop the south wall of Reine City. Their appearance, like most NPCs, is randomized every time you play the game. Quality auditions may get cast as various other male reindeer, and there are a lot of them.
Each guard will be played by a different person, obviously. For this audition, come up with a different voice for both of them. The person "officially" cast will be Guard 1, but hopefully there are lots of other auditions to fill in for Guard 2 and the other male reindeer.
Guard 1 [left]: [lower voice] Joyous occasion! As I draw breath! The weather certainly is crisp today. Guard 2 [right]: [slightly higher voice] Such as it is my good fellow! Yes it is, indeed! Guard 1: Certainly there have been many travelers who have come to our fair city of late. One cannot help but wonder why! Guard 2: Undoubtedly it is due to the decree.
Guard 1: Hold. Is that… MILK I spy? Guard 2: A cow with milk? Nonsense! That’s not how it works! ‘Tis the stuff of legend!
[Guard 1] My gullet is rather in need of quenching. [Guard 2] Yes. ‘Tis hard work, up here all day, issuing edicts from on high! [Guard 1] VERY WELL, cow. We shall accept your magic viscous quenching fluid! In exchange, we grant you passage through the gate! [Guard 2] So long as you promise not to eat anyone! [Arizona: "Eat… anyone? [to them] Oh uh… on my honor! Promise I won’t make trouble ‘fer y’all, sirs!"] [Guard 1] Then we must sally forth! A winter sprite will come and collect the offering for us. OPEN THE GATE!!! [Guard 2] OPEN THE GATE!!!
Another male NPC. Listed here only because the interaction with him is mandatory. He, too, has a randomized appearance.
Quality auditions here may also get cast as other male reindeer.
Welcome to Reine! Please wipe your hooves before proceeding into the city, and do not eat the shrubbery. It is ornamental, not a free snack. Any brawls or disorderly conduct will result in expulsion from the city and heavy salt fines! Have a nice visit! Please leave soon!
[Arizona: Howdy! Can I get some directions?] I already gave you directions. But if you insist, I can repeat them. [He proceeds to say the exact same spiel while Arizona tries to stop him.]
This character is not a mandatory encounter, but she does have a very memorable appearance in Chapter 1 of story mode. See if you can capture her energy.
Hello there! Are you an Elite 7 Fan too?... What am I saying? Of course you are! How could you not be! [Arizona: "The Elwhatnow?"] The Elite 7! How can you not know about the Elite 7! Oh, wait! Maybe you knew them when they were still the Elite 6? [Nope... Ain't ringin' a bell, ma'am.] What rock have you been living under? The Elite 7 are THE most awesome, THE coolest, THE fluffiest Reindeer there are!
[Arizona: What makes 'em so "THE"?] That's the best part! Nobody knows! Each... uh... each once-in-a-while, the winter sprites will pick a Reindeer to join the Elite. Except the time before last, when they chose TWO Reindeer, but that was sort of expected, considering they picked DASHER and DANCER, since they are twins.
And then finally the best thing that could possibly ever happen happened! [Arizona: "The story ended?"] No, you silly... Llama? [quieter] (Seriously, the heck is you?) [normal volume] VIXEN was picked! And of course she was. She's just THE BEST. Absolutely THE BEST! She's gorgeous and pretty and she's got legs for days and I could just get lost in her floof and I bet she smells like cinnamon and... Oh I'm sorry, where was I? Ohright! Vixen. She was picked just last year!
Another very minor but mandatory NPC with a randomized appearance. After Arizona defeats Velvet, this character with a randomized appearance gives his boat ticket to her, just to get her to leave the city. He likely was a witness to everything else Arizona had been doing since she arrived at Reine City, and like most citizens, was getting tired of her poking her nose everywhere.
[Arizona: "HEY!! ANYONE KNOW HOW’TA GET ‘TA THE HIGH PLAINS?!"] Here, take my cruise ticket. Down at the docks you’ll find the RSS Donner/Prancer. They’ll sail you to The Highlands.
[Arizona: "Wow, thanks mister!! I owe ‘ya one."] Really, that’s not necessary. [alternate line, said with fake sincerity, trying to get her to leave] Don't worry about it. Better hurry! The boat will be leaving soon.
[Arizona walks off-screen] By Stronghoof’s beard… I thought she’d never leave…
A minor but mandatory reindeer NPC with a randomized appearance, though he always wears the same hat. He says goodbye to Arizona after transporting her to the Highlands. If you're not sure what kind of voice to use, you could try an Irish accent, but I'm open to anything as long as I think "sailor" when I hear it.
Update: The RSS Donner/Prancer should be read as "R S S Donner Prancer". I'm 99% sure the "slash" should not be read.
Alright, this is as far as I can get you, miss. From here, you’re on your own.
[You said we were goin’ to The Highlands!] But this IS The Highlands! They don’t call it that for their accessibility to boats, now do they? ‘Tis a harsh land, true, but buried deep in the rock lies treasure beyond compare. So the stories go, at least. If that’s what you’re after, the alpacas here make great guides. I’d recommend seeking out a local herd.
So! You’ve been delivered, young miss. If you need a ride back to civilization, the RSS Donner/Prancer will be here loading cargo until tomorrow morning.
The first alpaca (or "Alpake") NPC that speaks to Arizona after she wakes up. Most of the alpaca have unspecified genders, but the first three are suggested by the sound of their speech blips to be female (1 and 2) and male (#3). The rest can be male or female. Quality auditions for these three (mandatory) alpacas may get other alpaca roles. All alpacas except for Adobo have randomized appearances.
In general, the Alpake are a very low-key community. Many of them are depressed, or sad, or resigned. They are all very low energy, and speak in low tones.
The stranger, she is awake. Small horned one… this land, it is not kind to outsiders. We do not know where you came from, but you should return there.
This is a fool’s errand, this quest of yours.
If you have truly taken leave of your sanity and insist on continuing your quest, you had better talk to our herd’s leader, Adobo.
The second alpaca (or "Alpake") NPC that speaks to Arizona after she wakes up. Most of the alpaca have unspecified genders, but the first three are suggested by the sound of their speech blips to be female (1 and 2) and male (#3). The rest can be male or female. [quietly] It’s no use…
*Sigh*... You sound just like the pointy one. We couldn’t dissuade her either…
But you really should consider going back home. This is no place for a young one such as you.
The third alpaca (or "Alpake") NPC that speaks to Arizona after she wakes up. For Alpaca #3, if you're not sure what kind of voice you want to do, one suggestion you might try is to sound like Eeyore (not Bil Baird, Ron Feinberg, or Ron Gans). https://www.behindthevoiceactors.com/voice-compare/Winnie-the-Pooh/Eeyore/
But feel free to try a different idea; I don't want all of the auditions to sound like Eeyore.
[referring to Arizona, and remembering Oleander who came by earlier] Probably will end up like the last one…
[Arizona: "Made it this far, didn’t I?"] Doesn’t mean you’ll make it any farther. Be wise, small horned one.
Every day, I wake and stare at the mountain. Why does it bring darkness into our lives? [upon a second interaction] This… is the path our ancestors walked…
Adobo is an Alpake that leads his tribe within The High Plains. Just like the rest of his clan, Adobo values little outside his clan's survival in the harsh environment of The High Plains, feeling obligated to carry on the legacy of his ancestors. When meeting outsiders, he insists that they leave, as The High Plains are mercilessly dangerous to everyone, especially those unfamiliar with it.
In the original Book of Lore (now of dubious canonicity with story mode being canceled) Adobo serves as the narrator of Chapter 4 where he and his tribe have endured hardships, with some escalated by "the strange one", Paprika. When his son returned with news of the Predators' return and the nation in need of a champion, Adobo chose Paprika as The High Plains' Key Keeper, if only to get rid of her. You can read Chapter 4 here for more Adobo: https://www.mane6.com/book-of-lore-archive/paprika/
In part 3 of chapter 1 of story mode, Arizona meets with Adobo after being directed by the alpaca villagers who rescued her. He says that he and the tribe have heard about the Council's decree regarding predators and the Key, but they can only afford to care for their own survival. Adobo mentions the Temple of the Ancestors, but is unable to provide further information regarding the Prophet's Key. He attempts to dissuade Arizona from continuing her quest, warning her of the fog maze and the monster that lurks within it.
Greetings, small horned one. I am Herd Leader Adobo. Are you well?
Ah yes. You are young, determined, with eyes still full of hope. You must be yet another following the Council's decree. We know of this. [he turns away from her as he talks] We the Alpake Clan of the Huacaya Mountains are wretched and alone in this world... But not so secluded that we haven't heard of the Toothed Ones, their return, and the search for the Key.
[slightly louder, mild shock] How did you find the secret entrance to the Eternal Caves of Neverending Length? [normal volume] Go then if you must. May Mother Nature show you mercy.
